Why we love them…

Don’t be fooled by the compact dainty appearance of the Yorkshire Terrier.
These cheeky little dogs are tough and feisty.
Although these days Yorkies are more likely to be a loyal companion, they were originally bred as ratters where their tenacious nature served them well.
Cheeky and playful, Yorkies possess a big personality in a pretty little package.
Things to know…

Yorkies are clever little dogs who were bred to work, so without proper exercise and training they can develop destructive or aggressive behaviour.
Like many small dogs Yorkies are prone to slipping kneecaps which may need to be fixed with surgery.
Various medical conditions including pancreatitis and Cushing’s disease are more common in Yorkshire Terriers than other breeds.
They are also prone to heart murmurs which can lead to heart failure.
Collapsing trachea and other respiratory conditions are also seen in Yorkies and may require long term management.
Like many dogs, Yorkies can develop allergies.
Before you commit…

If you are getting a puppy choose a breeder who has had the puppies in a home environment with lots of handling.
This will make socialising your Yorkie easier.
Ask whether there is any history of heart disease or joint abnormalities in the parents or their relatives.
If you are adopting an adult dog try to find out if there is any known history of lameness, heart murmurs, or recurrent tummy upsets.
Watch the dog move and play: Make sure they are moving comfortably and show no sings of coughing or tiredness.
Check for a shiny healthy coat and make sure there’s no signs of licking or scratching.
