Why we love them…

Dachshunds, sausage dogs, doxies… whatever you call them these guys are sure to bring a smile to your face.

They may be short but don’t be fooled.

They are bold and clever and possess a big-dog bark.

Cheeky and loyal, dachshunds are playful companions, effective watchdogs, and devoted family members.

They are intelligent and love to play games… although their independent nature means they may
have their own ideas about the rules!

Things to know…

A dachshund’s long back and short legs make him prone to back injuries including slipped or bulging discs, trapped nerves, and fractures.

Treatment may require spinal surgery, pain relief, and physio or hydrotherapy.

They are also prone to slipping kneecaps and arthritis, especially in the wrist joints.

Dachshunds can develop allergic skin disease causing itching, skin infections and hair loss.

Skin disease is usually managed with special food, regular medication, and shampoos, creams and ear cleaners

Before you commit…

Choose a breeder who selects for not-quite-so-long backs.

Ask whether there is a history of disc disease in mum or dad.

If you are taking on an adult dog ask if there is a history of back problems or joint problems.

Make sure the dog can walk normally without dragging their feet.

Look for sings of skin disease including sore skin, dirty or sore ears, and thinning hair or hair loss.

Research the cost of food, veterinary care, and insurance.
