Why we love them…

These guys are sociable and good-natured dogs with a bit of a cheeky streak.
Their big muscles have earned them a reputation as a powerhouse but they are usually more lover than fighter:
As keen for a snuggle on the sofa as they are for a stroll to the pub.
Things to know…

There is a lot of variation between bulldogs.
American bulldogs tend to live longer than British or French Bulldogs.
They also have higher energy levels and need more exercise.
All types of bulldogs are prone to allergies and skin disease, including ear and skin fold infections, which may require daily medication, special food, and regular bathing or skin treatments.
Even bulldogs without allergic skin disease often need their skin folds cleaning daily to avoid sore
skin and infection.
The short nose and large skull that gives bulldogs their loveable appearance also causes breathing problems which can make it hard for them to go for a walk and vulnerable to overheating.
It can also make it difficult for bulldogs to eat, cause vomiting or regurgitation, and make them prone to dental disease.
Cruciate disease and kneecap dislocation are common in bulldogs and they are prone to developing arthritis.
Treatment may involve surgery, daily medication and physio or hydrotherapy.
Bulldogs are a breed prone to cherry eye and they often have eyelid abnormalities which cause recurrent infections or ulcers on the eye.
Treatment often requires surgery.
Before you commit…

Choose a breeder who breeds dogs with less pronounced skin folds and longer noses and ask if the mother or father have needed eye surgery or if they have any skin conditions.
If you are taking on an adult dog ask whether there is any history of skin disease or allergies and look for signs of itching or sore skin: brown staining on the feet or face, hair loss, or redness.
